Common Signs of Nursing Home Abuse
With the large amount of responsibilities taken on by nursing home staff, these care facilities risk becoming negligent to the needs of their patients. In extreme cases, individuals living in a nursing home may experience severe mental and physical abuse.
Signs to look out for in a nursing home to ensure your loved one is not suffering from harm include the following:
- Unexplained bruising, cuts, burns, or other injuries
- Poor hygiene (body odor, dirty hair, soiled clothing, etc.)
- Malnourishment (considerable weight loss, sunken eyes)
- Behavioral changes (increased agitation, nervousness, withdrawal, etc.)
It is vital to make note of how your loved one is behaving and looking as they live in a nursing home to ensure they continuously receive the fair treatment they deserve.
The Case of Jon Danforth
Recently, Denver’s Juniper Village nursing home seems to be a key player in a case of adult care negligence.
On November 30, 2024, Jon Danforth left Juniper Village nursing home. He was a 45-year-old military veteran placed in the Juniper Village care by the US Department of Veterans Affairs after experiencing a diabetic coma. He has previously been diagnosed with schizophrenia and diabetes.
Police reports on November 30 show that police were dispatched to the nursing home over three hours after Jon had left the home. This gave him ample time to become lost. His family was worried for Jon, and his wife, Brandy Danforth, shared that he was a kind man with a big heart.
After multiple days with no answers, Jon was found on December 2nd in a gated area of the Sheridan Public Works Facility. This was about ten miles from the nursing home, and he had experienced temperatures as low as 18 degrees. In these conditions, Jon was found in severe medical distress and died shortly after.
Jon’s family continues to seek answers as they question how the Juniper Village nursing home had let him walk away and get lost. With proper justice, they hope to hold nursing homes more accountable for security that will prevent future incidents like this.
The Case of Haywood Hammond
In a similar case, Haywood Hammond’s family was entitled to justice and compensation after his unjust death in 2021. Hammond died of sepsis at age 70 on January 17, 2021. After a revealing autopsy, Hammond’s death was labeled a homicide due to the concerning evidence of neglect:
- Poor nutrition, living conditions, and hygiene
- He weighed only 91 pounds when he died
- He was found in his room, which was covered with maggots and flies
Hammond had been receiving 24-hour care from an individual caretaker since he had a stroke in 2005. His family was shocked by the news of his death and the conditions. His daughter, Shambi Milton, shared that his body was so deteriorated that the family was not able to have an open-casket funeral.
In response to the horrifying news of Hammond’s apparent neglect by his caretaker, the family decided to file a lawsuit against the caretakers and the businesses that paid them, including AAA Personal Care Services, Vrai Inc., and Arsema Inc.
In the lawsuit, Amy G Injury Firm’s trusted attorneys specifically claimed that the caretaker failed to provide their contracted 24-hour care to Hammond and clean, shower, feed, or provide medical care for him. We are further standing up for Hammond in advocating that the Colorado Department of Health Care Policy and Financing revoke the licenses of Hammond’s negligent caretakers. We hope our actions will prevent future negligent actions by caretakers in Denver.
